Generation Orange is an intimate coming-of-age story set against the backdrop of New York City in the grip of climate crisis. Following six adolescent activists over the course of three years in observational cinéma vérité style, the film traces their determined youthful optimism as it gives way to disillusioned anger verging on apathy in the face of cyclical natural disasters, momentous political setbacks, and the dawning reality of a less habitable earth.
Throughout each character's struggle, pinhole moments of hope and transcendental beauty emerge, reminding us all of our own teenage years and the collective uncertainty that the future inevitably holds.
To emphasize that impending climate doom is not inherent to any one generation and to illustrate the present precariousness of life on earth, Generation Orange adopts a futuristic, found-footage style that raises unsettling questions about how, and on what timeline, the film and its audience coexist.
